Death Stranding 2 is officially set to launch in June 2025, marking the return of Hideo Kojima’s signature blend of science fiction, emotion, and cinematic storytelling. Titled Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the sequel reunites us with Sam Porter Bridges as he traverses another strange and fractured world in an experience that promises to be just as bold — if not bolder — than the original.
Kojima has been carefully teasing the sequel's progress. In April, he confirmed that the sound mixing process had been completed, signaling that the game is nearing the final stages of development. With less than three months to go, fans are already revisiting the first game, now spiking in popularity again on Steam. Kojima has also hinted at new accessibility options like a “boss skip” toggle — a feature that may help players focus more on the story this time around.
Another intriguing reveal is the potential inclusion of bokka — traditional Japanese couriers — as part of the game’s thematic or mechanical inspirations. As always, Kojima is drawing from a rich mix of real-world culture and futuristic imagination.
Death Stranding 2 looks set to become one of the most anticipated PS5 exclusives of 2025. The original game stood out as one of the most unique experiences on the PS4, praised for its emotional depth, artistic direction, and polarizing gameplay. With On the Beach, Kojima Productions appears ready to push those boundaries even further.
Beyond this project, Kojima has multiple games in the pipeline. OD, a mysterious horror-tinged title developed in collaboration with Xbox, is already generating curiosity, while Physint, a new PS5-exclusive, is described as an “action espionage” experience — potentially a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid.
But for now, all focus is on June. With the finish line in sight, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is almost ready to deliver a new kind of journey — and fans are more than ready to walk that path once again.
To build anticipation, Kojima recently unveiled a 10-minute pre-order trailer, and it's packed with the kind of strange, cinematic spectacle only he could deliver. The trailer offers extended looks at both gameplay and story, with cryptic dialogue, surreal environments, and returning characters like Sam and Fragile — along with glimpses of new, mysterious faces.
We also see teases of new traversal tools, strange enemy encounters, and more emotional weight behind the narrative, hinting at themes of rebirth, connection, and sacrifice. Kojima’s trademark tonal shifts — jumping between eerie, philosophical, and outright bizarre — are in full effect here, making it clear that On the Beach won’t be pulling any punches when it comes to creative ambition.

Current Platform Status and Future Possibilities
Death Stranding 2 has been officially confirmed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive for now, with Kojima Productions yet to announce if it will launch on other platforms in the future.
The original Death Stranding debuted as a PS4 exclusive in 2019 before publisher 505 Games brought it to PC in 2020. Later, the Director’s Cut edition expanded availability to both PS5 and PC Game Pass. Based on this pattern, it seems likely that Death Stranding 2 is being developed primarily as a long-term PS5 exclusive, especially given the significant involvement of PlayStation Studios in its production. However, considering Sony’s growing investment in the PC market outside of its traditional console ecosystem, a future PC release remains a strong possibility.

Unraveling the Mystery: What We Know About Death Stranding 2's Story

“Should we have connected?” That’s the haunting question echoing through the first Death Stranding 2 trailers — and a key theme that seems to underpin the sequel’s strange, beautiful, and mind-bending journey. The four-minute reveal trailer is packed with cryptic imagery and layered symbolism that fans are still dissecting.
We catch glimpses of an older Sam Porter Bridges, a seemingly fully-recovered Fragile, and a mysterious new cult whose leader wears Amelie’s necklace and hairstyle — but hides their identity behind Higgs’ signature gold death mask. There’s mention of APAC (Automated Public Assistance Company), suggesting a new corporate power, and nautical elements appear more prominently than ever. A new organization called Drawbridge seems poised to replace Fragile Express, carrying forward the recurring themes of “rope” and “stick” from the original game.
Perhaps most intriguingly, the trailer hints at multiple alternate realities connected through the Beach, with possible variants of Sam, Lou, Fragile, and others at play. It’s enough to spark speculation for months — if not years.
One thing, however, is certain. Kojima completely rewrote the story after the COVID-19 pandemic. At The Game Awards 2022, he revealed:
“I had the story written before the pandemic. But after experiencing the pandemic, I just rewrote the whole story from scratch.” He then added, with a wry smile: “I also didn’t want to predict any more futures.”
The exact narrative remains a mystery, but Kojima Productions has shared a brief summary of what’s ahead:
“In Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, embark on an inspiring mission of human connection beyond the UCA. Sam – with companions by his side – sets out on a new journey to save humanity from extinction. Join them as they traverse a world beset by otherworldly enemies, obstacles, and a haunting question: should we have connected?”
